Space-based solar power could offer clean energy solution!

Recommended for Secondary Grades

Space-based solar power or Solar electricity generated in space is one potential solution that Europe is considering for the current energy issue. As per experts, the use of clean energy derived from space could be beneficial in the fight against climate change.

What is Geostationary orbit?

Geostationary orbit refers to an orbit that is about 36,000 km high. In this orbit, the satellites look like they are hanging over a fixed point on Earth.

The idea of the Solar Power Satellite Program has been around since the 1960s. The United Kingdom, China and the United States have shown interest in space-based solar power (SBSP).

The European Space Agency (ESA) plans to make a formal request to key European industries for a space-based solar generation preparation programme (“Solaris programme”).

The agency plans to look at the new technology’s technical feasibility, benefits, implementation options, business opportunities, and risks.

Key Facts about Space-based solar power!

  • The Solaris programme would look into whether space-based solar power (SBSP) could be used to make clean energy.
  • The initiative would try to figure out if SBSP generation could be used to make clean energy and help reduce carbon emissions.
  • Under the Solar Power Satellite Program (SBSP), huge solar panels in geostationary orbit are used to gather energy from the sun.
  • Space-based solar power would be able to make more energy than plants on Earth and beam it to the ground.
  • The energy would be turned into electricity.
  • Even though space-based solar power has the potential to provide a clean, steady source of energy, it has a number of big problems that need to be solved.
  • These problems include technological, economic, policy, and other problems.
