Study reveals climate change is a threat to Platypus populationWe have read about the adverse effects of global climate change, and also about Australian bushfires which have killed animals.

Now factors like drought and other effects of climate change may cause the duck-billed platypus to go extinct.

Platypuses were once considered widespread across the eastern Australian mainland and Tasmania. But that is no longer the case.
 	According to the researchers from the University of New South Wales (UNSW), the platypus may disappear due to habitat destruction, dam-building and more.
 	Additionally, land clearing, climate change, drought and more are also major threats to the Platypus population.
 	In fact, the count of platypus numbers has already reduced by half.
 	The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has put the status of platypus' conservation status as 'Near Threatened.'

The researchers have said urgent national conservation efforts are needed to save the platypus.

About the Platypus

It is a semiaquatic egg-laying mammal found in eastern Australia, including Tasmania.
 	It is the only mammal that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young.
