Syria: government, opposition agree to start drafting constitution

Recommended for Secondary Grades

Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic is a country in Western Asia. It shares its borders with Lebanon, Turkey, Jordan, and Israel. Its capital and also its largest city is Damascus.

Bashar al-Assad has been president of Syria since 2000. He has been accused of corruption and human rights abuses. And since March 2011, Syria has been caught up in a multi-sided civil war. The country is considered to be the most violent country in the world due to the war. The civil war in Syria has killed more than 570,000 and created millions of refugees.

After a very long discussion, the Syrian government (led by Bashar al-Assad) and opposition groups have agreed to start drafting a new constitution. The agreement has come about after the United Nations worked to make the parties involved come to an agreement.

The committee

The constitution drafting committee has 45 members. They include some from the Syrian government, opposition, and as well as civilian activists.

Earlier, in January 2018, they had agreed to form a 150-member committee to draft a new constitution. But they hadn’t met since January last year.

The committee, together with United Nations officials, will be in Geneva, Switzerland till this Friday to discuss these issues.

Let us hope that this is will lead to peaceful times ahead for Syria.
