What happens if you get a deep cut on your body? The doctor stitches it up.

Dasia Taylor is a 17-year-old teen living in Iowa, US. She has invented sutures that change colour if they get infected.

What is a suture?

A suture is a stitch used to sew up a cut in a person’s body. Sutures are very important to help the cut close fast. However, sometimes, if they are not taken care of, such wounds can get infected. This can be dangerous.

In January 2021, she won a US$25,000 prize at the Regeneron Science Talent Search for her invention. This is America’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school senior students.

Dasia actually started invented these colour-changing sutures in 2019. She wants to be a doctor and had wanted to create it to help people, especially in poor countries. So, with the help of her teacher, she started working on the idea.

How did she invent the sutures?

During her research, Dasia found that the juice of beetroots could make colour-changing stitches. Beet juice could detect acidity changes in the skin, indicating an infection. The sutures change from a bright red colour to a purple colour if it detects an infection.

This brilliant teen says that this method is cheap and easy to use. She will continue doing research on it and hopes that her invention can help people.
