Telegram, Signal benefit from WhatsApp’s new policy update

Last week, we read about WhatsApp updating its privacy policy. The policy update has concerned many people around the world. They feel that WhatsApp’s sharing of important information with Facebook (WhatsApp’s parent company) could be a violation of privacy.

After the announcement from WhatsApp, downloads of other instant messaging apps have increased a lot. They include Signal and Telegram. In India alone, they have been downloaded almost 4 million times since WhatsApp updated its policy. Both these apps say they offer stronger privacy features.

Signal has seen the largest increase, with 2.3 million new downloads between 6 and 10 January 2021. It has become the top downloaded app on both Google Play store as well as Apple App store. Before this, Signal was downloaded only 24,000 times between 1 and 5 January.

During the same period, WhatsApp’s downloads fell 35%, from 2 million to 1.3 million. Since then, WhatsApp has clarified saying that WhatsApp’s new policy update does not affect the privacy of user’s chats with friends or family. Instead, the change is for businesses who use WhatsApp for customer service.
