African grey parrot is one of the smartest birds in the world

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Have you heard of the expertise of the African grey parrot? Well, let’s find out!

Parrots are famous for copying words and sounds. They are known for their intelligence.

Among parrots, the African grey parrot is believed to be the smartest. They can copy human speech the best among all parrots. Not only that, but they are also known for their kindness and friendliness.

Also known as grey parrots or Congo grey parrots, these birds are found in the rainforests of central Africa, in countries like Côte d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast) and Kenya.

It is the largest parrot found in Africa. It can grow as longs as about 12.9 inches (a little longer than a ruler that you use in school).

The grey parrot has silver feathers, a white mask, and a bright, reddish tail. Both males and females look very similar.

African greys parrots like to live in noisy big groups and eat fruits and berries. Once they find a partner, they stay together for their whole lives.

Due to their intelligence and ability to copy human speech, the African grey parrot are the most popular pet bird in the world.

Sadly, because of this, they are endangered (getting less in number). Many are stolen from jungles and sold illegally. They are now protected by the government.
