The City of Sydney in Australia now runs on 100% renewable energyThe City of Sydney is the central business district of Sydney, Australia. Now the City, as well as its surrounding inner-city neighbourhoods, will get 100% of its energy needs from renewable energy.

Renewable energy (or clean energy) comes from natural sources or processes that cannot be 'finished'. For example, solar energy is a renewable energy source. The Sun will always be shining even if it varies due to time and weather.

The switch to renewable energy in the City of Sydney will save a lot of money and also stop harmful carbon dioxide emissions.

All power needs will be provided by two solar farms and one wind farm located across New South Wales (the state in which Sydney is located). The City has 115 buildings, 75 parks, 23,000 streetlights, various sports facilities and more. It is home to around 250,000 people.

The City's mayor Clover Moore said that this step has been taken to fight climate change. She has urged other cities to also take similar action.

The City of Sydney became carbon neutral in 2007. In 2019, it was among the 43 cities which were recognised for their dedication toward reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
