The Festival of Chhath Puja

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Chhath Puja is a Hindu festival celebrated in many states of India.

The festival is celebrated according to the Hindu calendar. This year, Chhath Puja falls on 20 November.

  • During this festival, people pray to the Sun God Surya and his sister Chhati Maiya.
  • The Sun gives us light, energy and is important for a healthy and good life. So, during Chhath Puja people pray and thank the Sun God for all his blessings.
  • This is a four-day festival. People take baths in holy rivers and ponds and offer prasad (food used in prayers) during the Chhath Puja. Sometimes they also fast, which means they don’t eat or drink for a day to pray.
  • No idol or statue of God is worshipped during Chhath Puja.

Chhath Puja is most-widely celebrated in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh. It is also celebrated in Nepal and by Indians living in other countries, such as South Africa, Japan, Indonesia and the US.
