The festival of Chinese New Year

Today is the first day of the Chinese New Year (also known as Lunar New Year). The date changes every year.

  • The festival is usually referred to as the Spring Festival in mainland China and is one of several Lunar New Years in Asia.
  • Celebrations will go on till the Lantern Festival on 26 February.

  • This festival is also celebrated as ‘Seollal’ in Korea and Tet Holiday in Vietnam.
  • Chinese New Year is also celebrated worldwide in regions with many Chinese people, like Europe, the US and Malaysia.
  • Each year in the Chinese calendar is named after one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. 2021 is the Year of the Ox.

How do people celebrate the festival of Chinese New Year?

  • The festival was traditionally a time to honour deities (gods) as well as ancestors.
  • On this day, people celebrate with fireworks, eating dumplings, gifting money in lucky red paper envelopes, wearing new clothes and more.
  • It is also an occasion for Chinese families to gather for dinner. However this year, due to COVID-19, travel has been limited in China.
