The Festival of Durga Puja

Recommended for Foundational Grades

The festival of Durga Puja, also called Durgotsava, is an annual 10-day Hindu festival. It is especially popular in West Bengal, Assam, Bihar, Tripura, and Odisha, as well as in countries of Bangladesh and Nepal, where it is celebrated as Dashain.

Durga Puja coincides with another festival, Navratri. It is celebrated during the same period of the year and is also a celebration of the Goddess Durga.

This year, the festival of Durga Puja is being celebrated from 17th October to 25th October. The festival ends on the tenth day (Vijaya Dashami). At the end of the puja, the devotees embark on a procession carrying the worshipped idols of Goddess Durga, to a river, or another water body, and immerse them.

The festival marks the victory of goddess Durga in her battle against the demon, Mahishasura. It marks the triumph of good over evil.

Other gods and goddesses such as Ganesh, Saraswati, Lakshmi and Kartekiya are also worshipped. The festival is marked by scripture recitations, performance arts, revelry, gifting, family visits, feasting, and public processions. Pandal hopping is also a popular activity.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the festival of Durga puja and Navratri are not looking the same. PM Modi has also advised the country to stay guarded during the festivals.
