This contest judges China’s “ugliest buildings”

Recommended for Middle Grades

A very unique contest has kicked off recently in China – it is a poll to choose China’s “ugliest buildings”!

For the past 11 years, this lighthearted “contest” invites people to vote on China’s “ugliest buildings”. A Chinese architecture website, archcy.com, organises this annual poll. The website hopes that this contest will encourage people to think about how the idea of beauty can change depending on the person.

The website has identified about 90 contenders for the 12th edition of its annual ‘Ugliest Building Survey’. They include a violin-shaped church and a hotel in Inner Mongolia in the form of a monstrous babushka doll (nesting doll). Another contender is a “welcome to hell” glass bridge connecting two mountains in Sichuan. It has two massive statues of people in traditional dress on the end of it.

Moreover, social media users have also been sharing photos of what they consider “unattractive buildings” across the country.

Top contender

Currently, the top contender for China’s “ugliest buildings” contest is the gigantic southern gate of the famous Zhejiang University in Eastern China. So far, the gate has attracted 8,739 votes.

Do you know of any building which you think should be part of such a contest? Tell us about it.
