Recommended for Middle Grades

Do you what a mollusc is?

They are a group of animals that have soft bodies which have a “head” and a “foot” region. Their bodies are also usually covered by a hard exoskeleton (like shells). Snails, octopuses, squid, clams, and oysters all come under the mollusc family.

There is a mollusc called the giant Pacific chiton. It is also known as the “wandering meatloaf“. Its nickname has come from the way it looks similar to a dish called meatloaf.

Scientists have found that the wandering meatloaf has teeth made of a rare iron mineral. This mineral is called santabarbaraite. It has been found only in rocks before. So, this is the first time that santabarbaraite has been found in the teeth of a living organism.

Chitons

Chiton molluscs live along rocky coastlines. They are known for their tough teeth attached to a soft tongue-like part. They use their tough teeth to scraps food off rocks.
