Tree of life notebooks returned after 20 years!
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
Charles Darwin’s Tree of Life notebooks was safely returned to the original owner. It is not known who gave back the books to the library. The books seem to be in good condition. The books were left in a bright pink gift bag and a plain brown envelope addressed to the University Librarian.
Tree of Life!
In 1837, Charles Darwin sketched the famous “Tree of Life” in one of his notebooks. He was merely 28 years old. More than twenty years after they were first reported missing, the notebooks have been returned to Cambridge University Library. The books were preserved at the library for more than a hundred years.
The notebooks are part of a set of writings that Darwin kept when he first thought about how animals change over time. In the notebooks, “B” and “C” are written on the backs of the books that were recently found.
One of the most interesting things about the notebooks is a simple sketch of a tree of life. The sketch shows how species have changed over time. Darwin wrote, “I think,” above the sketch. According to experts the notebooks “may be small, just the size of postcards, but their impact on the history of science is immense.”
Darwin in Conversation Exhibition!
The original public appeal was shared around the world. This resulted in thousands of news stories and hundreds of thousands of people being reached through social media.
As a thank you for this global effort to find the missing notebooks, the notebooks will be on display at Cambridge University Libraries from July. They will be part of the free Darwin in Conversation exhibition, which opens on July 9.
