Say hello to the two newest members of the Indian Premier League (IPL)!

Next season’s IPL will feature two new teams, taking the number of teams from 8 to 10. One will be based out of Ahmedabad, under the ownership of CVC Capital Partners. And the other is the Lucknow team, under the ownership of RPSG Group.

There was an auction on 25 October 2021 for the two teams. An auction is a type of sale where an item goes to the person/company which offers the highest amount of money.

So, the Indian Premier League 2022 will have ten teams and 74 matches. Each team will play 7 home and 7 away matches.

CVC Captial Partners is a private investment firm while the RPSG Group, an Indian conglomerate (group of companies). RPSG Group bid ₹7090 crores while CVC Capital bid ₹5625 crores at the auction. RPSG Group are also part owners of the Indian Super League (ISL) club ATK Mohun Bagan

Now, there will be a mega players’ auction as well soon. This auction will allow all the teams to try and get the best players.

The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) had earlier shortlisted six cities for the two new teams. They were Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Cuttack, Guwahati, Ranchi and Dharamshala. So, out of these, they chose Ahmedabad and Lucknow.

This year, Chennai Super Kings won the IPL 2021 title after beating Kolkata Knight Riders.
