Recommended for Preparatory Grades

Japan gets pummelled by a typhoon Nanmadol! Rescue workers in Japan warn people of mudslides and flooding. Typhoon Nanmadol hurt hundreds of people after it hit the southern island of Kyushu.

Meteorologists say that the typhoon has cut power to about 140,000 homes. The storm is upgraded to a cyclone after it moves across a large part of the country and heads out to sea.

Key facts!

  • Wind gusts of up to 234 kilometres per hour were caused by the super typhoon, which caused damage to homes and messed up transportation and business.
  • Tokyo got a lot of rain, which caused underground train lines to flood and have to be shut down.
  • The bullet train, ferries, and hundreds of flights have all stopped running.
  • Businesses and shops have also shut down.
  • Local news stations have shown videos of billboards and building roofs being ripped off by the wind.
  • Scientists think that this year will have a very active hurricane season because of a natural phenomenon called La Nia.
  • Because of climate change, the water temperature at the surface of the Atlantic and Caribbean seas has been going up.
  • This may affect both how often and how strong storms happen.
