OneWeb and satellite internet service

We have read about SpaceX’s Starlink. Starlink is a collection of small internet satellites that aims to provide high-quality internet service across the world.

Another company called OneWeb (based in the UK) is also competing with Starlink. Similar to Starlink, OneWeb aims to deliver broadband internet connections from space using satellites.

OneWeb recently launched 36 satellites. This takes the total number of satellites it has to 146. It aims to launch a total of about 650 satellites.

By this year, it will offer internet services to Britain, Northern Europe, Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and Arctic Seas. Global connectivity will be available by mid-2022.

Difference between OneWeb and Starlink

However, there is a difference between how OneWeb and Starlink will operate. OneWeb will be working with other telecommunications companies to deliver its services to consumers. But Starlink will be dealing directly with consumers.

Who owns OneWeb?

OneWeb was founded by Greg Wyler in 2012. But it entered bankruptcy in March 2020. Bankruptcy is when a person or business is unable to repay the money it owes. The company was then bought out by the UK government and Bharti Global (the owner of telecom company Airtel).
