Unrest in paradise – Mon district, Nagaland

Mon district, Nagaland is facing unrest following certain events. On 4-Dec the Indian army soldiers killed 14 people. It was later discovered that there were 14 civilian coal miners who were returning home. The incident took place along the border with the Myanmar region in the Mon district.

What caused the Indian army to react?

Indian army informed that they acted basis the information they received about the presence of separatist guerrillas at the borders. Further that the people in the truck refused to cooperate, which led to the soldiers’ reaction.

The details and reasons behind this unfortunate incident are being investigated.

Who are separatist guerrillas?

An independent group of people who believe in disturbing the existing law and order and indulging in warfare to meet their objectives of generally a separate space or state.

What happened after the incident?

Immediately after the incident, protests broke out in the Mon district. The local population believes that this action of the army was to harm the local communities. As an outcome of the unrest, the district authorities had to shut down internet services and impose a curfew. 

The locals have lodged a complaint against the security forces with the Nagaland police. They also believe that it is not the first time such an incident has happened. 

Who is investigating this incident?

A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been set up to find the exact reasons and details of this incident.
