Recommended for Foundational Grades
The deepest known shipwreck.
What is a shipwreck?
It’s a ship which has been destroyed in an accident at sea.
There are many shipwrecks at the bottom of the world’s oceans. Recently, explorers dived into and filmed the deepest known shipwreck in the world.
This ship is called the USS Johnston. It is an American Navy ship that sank on 25 October 1944 during World War II.
When was this wreck discovered?
The shipwreck was first discovered in 2019 in the Philippines Sea. It lies at a depth of about 6,456 metres. That’s as tall as some mountains! At the time, an underwater robot was sent in to explore it. But it couldn’t reach the deepest parts.
In the recent trip, the explorers went down to the shipwreck in a small submarine. They went in twice and each dive took eight hours. They took photos and videos of the wreck.
