What is a hurricane? It is an extremely large, powerful, and destructive storm with very strong winds. Hurricanes can destroy houses, bridges and trees.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has recently given us a chance to see what it looks like inside a hurricane

They used a drone to enter the inside of Hurricane Sam, a very strong hurricane that occurred on 30 September 2021. The drone is known as Saildrone Explorer SD 1045. And it captured an amazing video, fighting strong winds.

The Saildrone Explorer SD 1045

The NOAA is using the SD 1045 drone to collect live data of hurricanes to help predict their movements in the future. It’s a big solar-powered drone, about 7 metres long. It carries many instruments as well as microphones and cameras. Moreover, it also has a special ‘hurricane wing’ to help it move even in the worst conditions.

A human pilot operates the drone using satellite technology. The NOAA currently has 5 of these drones flying about in the Atlantic Ocean.
