What’s in a word – DaisyDo you know what a daisy is? It's a common but very popular type of flower. The most common type of daisy is known for its bright yellow centre and white petals. They can also come in other colours.

Daisies are found as wildflowers, especially in Europe. They are also a favourite flower of many gardeners.

The flower daisy is so popular that it has also become a widely-used name for girls.

So, where did this very cheerful flower get its name?

The word 'daisy' for the flower is believed to have originated in the 1300s.

It comes from the Old English word dægesege, or formerly dæges eage. It means 'day’s eye'. This is because the petals of some types of daisy open when the Sun rises and when the Sun sets.

For the same reason, in Medieval Latin, a common term for daisy was solis oculus, meaning 'sun’s eye'.

Additionally, the sentence "fresh as a daisy" means to be healthy and full of energy.
