Why do cats love to sit in boxes?

Recommended for Foundational Grades

Why do cats love to sit in boxes? Do you know that cats love to sit in boxes? Well, you must have seen images of cats sitting in boxes, drawers or even in their owners’ bags. But, do you know why they do so?

Why do they sit in boxes?

Cats feel safe and secure in enclosed spaces. They have a desire to sit in boxes. They use boxes as hiding places where predators can’t attack them from the side or behind. However, they tend to run from their problems.

Recently, a researcher has found that cats have a desire to sit in boxes. A new research project is called Kanizsa contour illusion. As a result, they get fooled by an optical illusion.

What is optical illusion?

Optical illusion is an experience to see something which does not exist.

What is Kanizsa contour illusion?

Kanizsa contour illusion is an image that tells how our visual system works. It makes shapes on the empty space.

The researcher has used this project on the cat owners for the trial. Six images were assigned to 30 cat owners. They placed the images on the floor to see the behaviour of the cats, that is how the cats interacted with the images. Moreover, the owners were instructed to wear sunglasses in order to prevent eye contact with their cats.

The Kanizsa image was of a square, made of four Pacman shapes that form the corners of the square. Pacman shapes are from the 1980 maze action video game. As a result, seven cats came upon the perfect Kanizsa square while eight cats were attracted to another square image in which pacman mouths were pointing outward.
