Wild elk with tyre around its neck for 2 years is finally free

Recommended for Foundational Grades

For the last 2 years, people have seen a wild elk roaming about in Colorado, US with a car tyre around his neck. But now, thankfully, wildlife officials have managed to help him get rid of it.

What is an elk?

An elk is a type of large deer. They have big, flat horns called antlers and are found in Northern Europe, Asia, and North America.

This elk is about four-and-a-half years old and weighs around 270 kg. Wildlife officials first saw him with the tyre in July 2019. But it is only now that they were able to help him. After trying three times earlier, officials were finally able to capture him safely to remove the heavy tyre around his neck.

How did they remove the tyre?

Officials gave him medicine to sleep while they removed the tyre. Sadly, they had to cut off his antlers. But, they did it safely without any harm or pain to him. Officials said that the tyre weighed about 16 kg! Such incidents seem to often happen to animals like elks in the region.

However, the good news is, the elk’s neck is still in good condition. Hopefully, the elk can wander around more freely now, without the heavy tyre around his neck!
