Women’s marriageable age to be raised to 21

Recommended for Middle Grades

Women’s marriageable age to be raised to 21. Union Cabinet takes a major decision.

A bill was proposed to the cabinet, that aimed to bring equality in the marriageable age of men and women. Earlier this year, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi announced that the government would take a decision on the age of marriage of women. A four-member task force was to analyze the pros and cons.

Panel report to change the marriageable age

The panel submitted their report about raising women’s marriageable age to 21 in December last year. If there is gender equity and gender empowerment in every field, it should be in the marriage too, as the marriageable age of men in India is 21.

If a girl gets married at 18 years, it cuts her opportunities to go to college and live her life on her own expectations. Equality should prevail everywhere.

The government will introduce a change in the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act (PCMA), 2006 in the session. The Child Marriage Act also specified 18 as the marriageable age for women, while 21 is for men.

The Special Marriage Act and Hindu Marriage Act 1955 will also observe changes around the change in the marriageable age in the upcoming sessions.
