World Day of the Deaf – 27 September
Recommended for Foundational Grades
World Day of the Deaf (or World Deaf Day) is celebrated every year on the last Sunday of September. This year, that date falls on 27 September.
On 23 September, we celebrated the International Day of Sign Languages. This whole week (from Monday to Sunday) has been celebrated as the International Week of the Deaf.
The purpose of this day and the International Week of the Deaf is to help people know more about deaf people and their problems. Not only that but it also celebrates their achievements and contributions.
Deaf people all over the world have their own unique culture, heritage, and language. So, it is important to celebrate it. This day also promotes awareness of rights.
This year, the theme of the day is “I sign for Human Rights”.
The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) leads all these celebrations. WFD is an international organisation that includes 130 national associations of deaf people. It represents over 70 million deaf people worldwide.
WFD works closely with the United Nations (UN) to promote the rights of deaf people.
