Time’s Person of the Year – Joe Biden and Kamala Harris

US President-elect Joe Biden and his Vice-President Kamala Harris have been named Time’s Person of the Year for 2020.

Every year, Time Magazine chooses a person, a group, an idea or an object that “for better or for worse” has had the most impact on the events over the 12 months.

Other people honoured this year include:

Guardians of the Year: Dr Anthony Fauci and frontline health workers as well as Porche Bennett-Bey, Assa Traoré, and racial-justice organisers.

Businessperson of the Year: Zoom’s founder Eric S. Yuan.

Athlete of the Year: LeBron James, US basketball star

Entertainer of the Year: South Korean pop group BTS

World news update

Hong Kong national security law

Hong Kong’s pro-democracy media businessman Jimmy Lai has been charged under China’s new national security law. He is the most high-profile person charged under the new law and could face a long jail term if found guilty.

COVID-19 vaccine

AstraZeneca said that it will consider combining its experimental COVID-19 vaccine with Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine. Russian scientists have suggested this could make the vaccine more effective.

Robotaxis launched in China

A Chinese company called AutoX has announced it has launched fully driverless robotaxis on public roads in Shenzhen city, China. It is the first company in China to do so.

These robotaxis do not have back up drivers or are controlled by someone else. There are 24 robotaxis on the roads for now.
