COVID-19 update

The US has started giving the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine to its health workers. New York nurse Sandra Lindsay became the first person in America to get it.

The total number of cases reported worldwide till now is 73.5 million.

A new study says that a quarter of the world’s population may not be able to get a vaccine till 2022. This is because most of the rich countries are buying up the current vaccine supplies.

Electoral college confirms US President-elect Joe Biden’s win

The US electoral college has formally confirmed President-elect Joe Biden’s win of the presidential election. He received 306 votes while Trump got 232. However, current President Donal Trump continues to refuse to accept defeat.

Mitch McConnell, the majority leader of the Republican Party in the US Senate congratulated Joe Biden on his win. He is the first elected official of the Republican Party to do so.

MacKenzie Scott gives away US$4.2 billion in four months

MacKenzie Scott is the ex-wife of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. During the last four months, she has donated to food banks and emergency relief funds for people affected by the pandemic. Overall, she has donated around US$6 billion this year.

Ms Scott is the world’s 18th-richest person. Last year she signed the Giving Pledge, promising to give away the majority of her fortune.

Kangaroos can communicate with humans

A study conducted with kangaroos in zoos shows that they can also “communicate” with humans, just like dogs do. They can ask for help by using their gaze to “point” at something they want.
