How did people send messages before phones and the internet were invented? By post! The mail or post is a system for transporting postcards, letters, and parcels.

What is the Universal Postal Union or UPU?

The UPU is an agency (part) of the United Nations (UN). It coordinates postal rules among member nations and the worldwide postal system. Its headquarter (centre) is located in Bern, the capital of Switzerland.

  • We celebrate World Post Day to remember the importance of the postal sector (mail) in our everyday lives.
  • This day also recognises how important it is to the development of countries.
  • There are around 650,000 offices and 5.3 million postal staff worldwide.
  • Postal services across the world work hard to deliver important documents, medical items and school materials too.
  • Every year, more than 150 countries celebrate World Post Day with exhibitions, letter-writing competitions, etc. In India,
  • National Post Day is also celebrated on 10 October.
  • World Post Day marks the anniversary of the creation of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874.
