A new study says that the world’s biggest underwater eruption led to the formation of a giant underwater volcano in 2018.

Scientists discovered the 2,690-foot-tall (820 metres) volcano in the western Indian Ocean, near the island of Madagascar. Before that, they had detected a series of earthquakes, which was unusual. This is because that area doesn’t get many earthquakes. After studying the information, they found the huge underwater volcano.

Between May 2018 and May 2021, more than 11,000 detectable earthquakes shook Mayotte, a small island (under France) between Madagascar and Mozambique. Scientists also detected very low-frequency earthquakes, associated with volcanic activity.

Then, in July 2018, scientists realized that Mayotte was moving eastward at about 7.8 inches (20 centimetres) a year, according to satellite data.

Moreover, this volcano’s magma (molten rock) comes from the deepest volcanic magma reservoir known to scientists.

So, they decided to explore the area underwater in a submarine. Using its equipment, they found the new underwater volcano. The team is keeping a check on the area for more earthquakes and volcanic activity.
