World’s oldest living tortoise: 190-year-old Jonathan.

Have you seen a tortoise? That too an old one! Older than even your grandparents? It’s hard to believe, right? But, it exists, and records say so. Let’s find out together.

Jonathon, a 190-year-old tortoise is ranked as the oldest living land animal by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Jonathon lives at St Helena Island, British Overseas Territory. It celebrates its 190th birthday in 2022.

The estimated age of the 190-year-old tortoise

Jonathon’s age is estimated on the basis of the fact that he was 50 years old when he arrived at St Helena from Seychelles in 1882.

As he has grown old, Jonathon has no sense of smell and vision. He is blind, but his hearing power is still excellent. You will be thrilled to know that this old tortoise loves the company of humans and he responds nicely to his doctor, Joe Hollins.

The records also state that he is the oldest chelonian.

What is chelonian?

Chelonian is a category that includes all turtles, terrapins and tortoises.

Jonathon’s favourite foods are cabbage, cucumber, carrots, apples and other seasonal fruits. Isn’t it interesting?

So, our curious kids, shouldn’t we follow foods that this old tortoise tends to like?
