You’ll grow nearly 1000 km of hair in your lifetime

Recommended for Middle Grades

Did you know, the average person’s hair will grow nearly 1000 kilometres during their lifetime?

Scientists believe that hair grows about 6 inches per year and the average head has 100,000 hairs. So, take an average lifespan of 67.2 years. 6 x 100,000 x 67.2 equal to 40,320,000 inches and that is 636 miles or about 1000 kilometres. However, its growth is not uniform throughout your lifespan.

Hair on the body

While we may not see it all the time, even we humans have hair more or less everywhere on the body.  The exceptions are the soles of the feet, the inside of the mouth, the lips, the backs of the ears, the palms, and the eyelids.

Hair is composed of multi-layered flat cells whose rope-like filaments give structure and strength to the hair shaft. The hair root, referred to as the follicle, is found within the skin and develops before we are even born. A macromolecule known as scleroprotein makes up hair and stimulates its growth.

Hair follows a particular growth cycle with 3 distinct and simultaneous phases: anagen, catagen, and telogen. Every section has specific characteristics that verify its length.
