The Next Big Thing: ‘Gaming in School’

As rightly stated by Jackal from Far Cry 2 “You can’t break a man the way you break a dog or a horse. The harder you beat a man, the taller he stands.” In the same way online gaming stimulates a player to stand against all odds.

Video games have been around for the last five decades. From the original Doom to The Cycle: Frontier, there has always been a kind of religious following for video games since their inception, just like in real sports.
With the development of the internet, online games have surged to popularity. People can host online parties with their friends instead of organizing stereotypical 90’s Lan gaming sessions. This, indirectly has brought the world closer. Now one could play with someone whose thousands of miles away from their home by just turning on the gaming console.

Now the question arises, why should online gaming be made part of the school’s curriculum? Firstly, video games allow you to connect with your friends even after school time. Secondly, video games help to relieve stress. After a stressful math’s lesson if one gets an online gaming session, it would help to scale down the stress and help them in relaxing for the rest of their lessons. Finally, video games teach important lessons such as leadership, social-skills, strategizing, etc.
Online gaming classes have already been introduced in several schools such as Yung Ping Technological Senior Highschool in Taiwan. Incorporating online gaming into the curriculum would be a challenging task. Many problems would arise such as finding appropriate teachers to teach the subject, the kind of homework to be assigned and last but not the least the syllabus. These are the problems which any school would face who are planning to introduce the subject in their curriculum.
The solution would be to have it as an optional subject. The problem of a teacher can be resolved by hiring professional coaches who can teach the students offline or online. Homework would be application of what the students have learnt in the schools and to promote out of the box thinking while playing the games.
The curriculum would consist of game development, studies and functioning of various games, etc. testing could consist of question answers and a practical test where students are pitched each other to get higher marks.
Board exams would now not only be an evaluation of how much a student can cram, but how they can apply what they have learnt through this subject. Just like school’s host inter school competitions, a league could be created for gaming competitions with an annual competition for the school’s, the winning students could get a scholarship or an award so that they have a motivation to win this competition.
From what we have discussed, if implemented aptly online gaming could become part of school curriculum which could help in building up logical ability and concentration of the students.

The Next Big Thing: ‘Gaming in School’. Do you think so?
