Virtual Learning : Different Perspectives
“Learning is not attained by chance; it must be sought for with ardour and diligence”, said Abigail Adams.
And that is the reason why, from times immemorial, schools and colleges have been set up to facilitate learning in the way one understands, so to help the students gain knowledge and skills translating them to wisdom.
Disadvantages of online learning:
Prior to 2019, students went to schools to learn, and teachers to teach, but since the time COVID-19 has struck the world, everything has changed. People around the world are learning online on their devices, including their computers, phones, I-pads, tablets etc. This kind of learning which happens while sitting at one place, can have adverse effects on the mind and body if it is not monitored and controlled. On one hand, students and teachers can put on weight as they sit for long hours with no break time in between. On the other, this kind of learning also affects one’s eyes because classes can go on for hours on end and the rays emanating from the device can damage the eyes.
Because of online learning, students hardly get to interact the way they do when they are physically present in school; with their teachers and peers alike. They also may have to wait for a long time before their questions get answered. There is no social interaction with the peers, as they do not get to meet one another in real life. It makes their life dull and boring.
Another disadvantage of learning virtually is that the internet connection can slow down at any time, causing disruptions in the student’s learning. While learning online, the students can easily switch off the camera and do whatever they want instead of listening to the teacher and doing their work. When the assessments take place, they can cheat by taking themselves off the camera, ask their parents for the answers to the questions given because they know that the teacher will not be able to see.
For me too, looking at the experiences I have up until now, I would prefer going to school to learn because that is the place where I find joy at, rather than sitting alone at home, studying online and not meeting friends at all.
As every cloud has a silver lining and every coin has two sides to it, this is true with virtual learning as well. Online learning too has its own advantages if one does not overlook them.
Advantages of online learning
Online learning allows the students to sit at a place where they feel convenient, instead of sitting in the classroom on the furniture that may not be so comfortable to sit on.
Online learning from home also helps to save energy, effort and time on travel. It helps to save fuel and hence reduces carbon emissions.
Online learning costs less as the parents do not have to pay for things like transport, stationery, and food etc. that the school provides compulsorily on its’ campus.
It provides a platform for students to find out new tools that can enhance their learning using technology. It not only expands students’ learning abilities but also changes their individual personality as well.
Because of online learning, students can become more self-motivated, responsible and can manage time more effectively.
But no matter what happens, one must adapt to any situation one is in.
“The wise adapt themselves to circumstances, as water moulds itself to the pitcher”.
Whether we learn in school or at home virtually, the fact is that we are learning, and growing stronger every day and that should be enough to make us happy.
