Mr Mukherjee is an Indian politician who served as the 13th President of India from 2012 to 2017.
 	He was born on 11th December 1935 in Mirati, a village which is now in Birbhum district, West Bengal.
 	Before Mr Mukherjee became involved in politics, he also worked as a clerk, a lecturer as well as a journalist.
 	His career in politics formally started when he was elected as a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1969, from the Indian National Congress party.

Mr Mukherjee has held many important posts throughout his career before becoming the President. Some of them were as follows-

Union Minister of Finance (2009 - 2012 and 1982-1984)
 	Union Minister of External Affair (2006 - 2009 and 1995 - 1996)
 	Leader of the Lok Sabha (2004 - 2012)
 	Union Minister of Defence (2004 - 2006)

Mr Mukherjee is a widely respected figure in Indian politics, well-known for his amazing memory. Apart from the Bharat Ratna, he has also received the Padma Vibhushan. Mr Mukherjee has also been awarded numerous honorary degrees from universities around the world.

Mr Mukherjee ended his affiliation with the Indian National Congress after his election as President in 2012. He also retired from active political life then.
