Bhupen Hazarika – The golden voice of AssamRecently, singer Bhupen Hazarika was awarded the Bharat Ratna (posthumously*), along with former President Pranab Mukherjee.

Let us learn about this much-loved singer, who was also popularly called Sudhakanta.

Bhupen Hazarika was a musician, singer, poet, filmmaker and lyricist.
 	He was born on 8th September 1926 in Sadiya, Assam.
 	Mr Hazarika's inclination towards singing was developed as a child, as he grew up listening to his mother's lullabies.
 	He sang his first song for a film at the age of 12. The song was called 'Biswa nijoy nokowan', for the Assamese film Indramalati.

Mr Hazarika received many awards during his lifetime. Some of them are the Dada Saheb Phalke Award (1992), Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (2008), Padmashri (1977) and Padmabhushan (2001). He also received the Padma Vibhushan in 2012 (posthumously).

Mr Hazarika wrote songs and sang mainly in the Assamese language. They have been translated into many languages, especially Hindi and Bengali.

He also composed the music for many Hindi films, including Rudaali, Daman and more.
 	Mr Hazarika is famous for having introduced the culture and folk music of Assam and Northeast India to Hindi cinema at the national level.

He passed away due to illness in 2011. His funeral was attended by an estimated half a million people.
