India’s first ‘garbage cafe’ opens in Chhattisgarh

India’s first ‘garbage cafe’ opens in ChhattisgarhThe officials of Ambikapur city in Chhattisgarh have started a unique scheme that aims at helping to solve two big problems - Plastic pollution and providing food to poor and homeless people. That unique solution is a 'garbage cafe'.

The cafe is located at Ambikapur’s main bus stand. It opened on 1st August 2019.

Now, what will this cafe do?

Through this scheme, the municipal corporation offers food to the needy in return for plastic waste.
 	Ragpickers and homeless people can collect plastic waste, which they can bring to the cafe and exchange it for food.
 	Those who collect 1 kg of plastic waste will receive a full meal, while those collecting 500g will be served breakfast.
 	The plastic collected through this scheme will be used to construct roads.

Why have they started this scheme?

To stop plastic pollution.
 	To provide proper food to those in need.
 	It is also part of Ambikapur's cleanliness campaign

Last year, under the central government’s Swachh Survekshan rankings, Ambikapur was declared India’s second cleanest city. The city has an excellent waste management system and recycles most of its waste properly.

Besides offering food, they are also planning a scheme to provide shelter to over 100 homeless people in the city.
