Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose was an Indian physicist, biologist, botanist, archaeologist and science fiction writer. He made important contributions to many different fields.

He was born on 30 November 1858 in Mymensingh, Bengal Presidency (present-day Bangladesh). After graduating, he worked as an Assistant Professor of Physics at Presidency College in Calcutta. It was during this period that Bose carried out his important physical and biological experiments.

His contributions

Bose was the inventor of wireless telegraphy (later developed as the radio). He also made very significant contributions to plant science by being the first to prove that plants also have life, like human beings.

Moreover, he invented the Crescograph, an instrument used to measure the rate of growth of plants.

With the publication of his book, ‘Niruddesher Kahini, the first major work in Bangla science fiction, Bose is also considered the father of Bengali science fiction.

Jagadish Chandra Bose was a remarkable scientist who worked hard despite facing hardships like racial discrimination. His scientific achievements have greatly influenced the world we live in today and made many new inventions possible.
