Two COVID-19 vaccines approved for use in India

Recommended for Middle Grades

Two COVID-19 vaccines have been approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to be used in India.

One is the Covishield vaccine, developed by pharmaceutical (medicine) company AstraZeneca together with Oxford University. It is being produced in India by the Serum Institute of India.

The other is called Covaxin. It was developed by pharmaceutical company Bharat Biotech together with the Indian Council of Medical Research.  It is the only India-developed COVID-19 vaccine.

Both COVID-19 vaccines have to be given in two doses. They need to be stored at temperatures between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius (about the same as a home fridge).

The government is expected to started vaccinations in about 10 days. Healthcare workers and other essential workers across the country will be vaccinated first.
