Angkor Wat bans elephant rides from 2020

Angkor Wat bans elephant rides from 2020Cambodia’s most well-known tourist destination, Angkor Wat, will end its elephant rides by 2020.

Angkor Wat is a popular religious monument visited by many people.
 	Every year, it is sees more than 2 million tourists.
 	These tourists use the elephants to carry them to and from the temples.
 	Now, the Angkor Elephant Group Committee which is the temple’s elephant-ride operator has decided to end these rides.
 	Its elephants will be transferred to a conservation and breeding centre.
 	Tourists will still be able to watch the elephants and take photos of them in the centre.
 	The plan is to implement this ban by early 2020.

Sambo

In 2016, Sambo the elephant dropped dead after being forced to carry tourists on her back at Angkor Wat.
 	She is said to have collapsed and died from exhaustion.
 	Many people signed a petition to end elephant riding at Angkor Wat after hearing this sad news.
 	Now after 3 years, Angkor Elephant Group Committee has agreed to end the rides.
