Australia’s Daintree rainforest returned to traditional ownership

Recommended for Secondary Grades

Australia’s Daintree rainforest is the world’s oldest tropical rainforest. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is over 180 million years old. Moreover, it has been home to generations of Australia’s Aboriginal people.

Who are the Aboriginal people of Australia?

The Aboriginal people of Australia are the various Indigenous peoples of the Australian mainland and many of its islands, such as Tasmania. This means they are the original inhabitants of the land who lived there.

As part of a historic deal, the government of Australia has returned ownership of the Daintree rainforest to the Aboriginal people. The Eastern Kuku Yalanji people will now manage it together with Queensland’s state government.

The Daintree rainforest

The forest, which is also a national park, borders the Great Barrier Reef. And is one of Australia’s most famous tourist spots. It is famous for its natural beauty, such as forests, wild rivers, waterfalls, and white sandy beaches. the Daintree rainforest also has diverse wildlife which includes 3,000 plant species, 107 mammals, 368 birds and 113 reptile species.

Moreover, since it is so old, it serves as an important record for the evolutionary process that shaped Australia.

The deal, which took four years of discussions, also includes some other Queensland national parks.
