Barbados has elected its first-ever president as it prepares to become a republic.

What is a republic?

A republic is a country that has an elected government and an elected leader (president).

Barbados is an island country in the West Indies, in the Caribbean region of the Americas. It was a British colony from the 1600s till 30 November 1966. However, it remained in the Commonwealth realm with the UK’s Elizabeth II as its queen.

But now, it will a republic by 30 November 2021. The country has elected Dame Sandra Mason to be its first president. Moreover, 30 November 2021 marks the country’s 55th anniversary of independence from Britain.

Dame Sandra was the first woman to serve on the Barbados Court of Appeals and has been governor-general since 2018. The governor-general is the representative of the queen.

Queen Elizabeth II

She is currently the head of a few countries under the commonwealth of nations. They include Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, and New Zealand.
