Centre and Delhi government launch pilot project for water conservationThe Delhi government and the central Jal Shakti Ministry have recently collaborated to launch a pilot project. This project aims to create natural reservoirs to conserve rainwater in the Yamuna floodplains.

With many countries in the world facing water shortage, this is an important project.

Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal launched the project.

CM Kejriwal said that this is the first time that they are trying such an experiment on such a large scale on the Yamuna floodplains.
 	For the project, they will dig ponds under the soil to recharge groundwater.
 	They plan to remove the topsoil and add porous soil to increase percolation.
 	They will keep observing the speed at which the water is percolating.

In July, the Delhi government had announced its decision to test natural water storage in the Yamuna floodplains during the monsoon season.

So, CM Kejriwal thanked the central government for its support, which ensured the launch of the pilot within two months of it being announced.

Union Minister Shekhawat said that India needs to look at the example of countries like Israel. Israel is self-sufficient in water, even though they have less access to water.
