Google doodle honours ‘Father of Judo’ Kano Jigoro
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
Today, Google doodle is celebrating the 161st birthday of Kano Jigoro. He was a Japanese man who is considered to be the ‘Father of Judo‘.
What is Judo?
Judo (meaning “gentle way”) is a modern Japanese martial art. It is also an event at the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.
Kano Jigoro was born in Mikage, Japan on 28 October 1860. He excelled at school and wanted to study a martial art called Jujutsu. So, when he was studying at Tokyo University, he finally met a Jujutsu master named Fukuda Hachinosuke who agreed to teach him.
As he practised Jujutsu, he removed some of its most dangerous moves and added other new moves. And that is how he created Judo, a safe and cooperative sport.
In 1909, Jigoro became the first Asian member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). And in 1960, Judo became an official Olympic sport.
