Greenhouse gases reach record levels

Greenhouse gases reach record levelsGreenhouse gases released into the Earth's atmosphere reached record levels in 2018.

This was stated in a new report published recently, called 'State of the Climate in 2018', led by the American Meteorological Society.
 	The report also said that the global warming power of these gases is now 43% stronger than in 1990.

Greenhouse gases include water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone.

These gases cause the greenhouse effect.
 	They trap heat from the Sun which would otherwise escape into the atmosphere.

The year 2018 was the fourth-warmest on record in the last 200 years.

Sea levels were also the highest on record that year.
 	This is because global heating melted land-based ice and expanded the oceans.
 	Sea surface temperatures were also near a record high.
 	Around the world temperature records were broken in countries like Mexico and Alaska.

This year as well, global warming has reached new highs.

This is not good news for Earth and people around the world must undertake corrective action.
