India weather: Tamil Nadu on red alert for heavy rains

Recommended for Middle Grades

India weather

Tamil Nadu continues to receive heavy rains. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a ‘red alert’ for 20 districts across the state, including Chennai. The districts include Tiruvallur, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu. This is for today and tomorrow as well.

Schools and colleges in nine districts of Tamil Nadu will remain shut on 10 and 11 November.

Officials in Chennai have advised people not to go out and keep enough supplies of food and other important materials. They have also set up relief camps and free food canteens. Rescue operations are also underway. Hundreds of houses have been damaged across the state and some people are staying in relief camps.

Neighbouring union territory Puducherry is also facing similar rain conditions. Relief teams have been deployed and schools and colleges remain closed till 11 November.

India weather

Heavy to very heavy showers are also expected over parts of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala today and tomorrow. Isolated rains and thunderstorms are also possible over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Odisha and Telangana.

Experts believe that a lot of the extreme weather changes we are facing today is due to climate change.
