The world’s oldest twins

Guinness World Records has confirmed that two Japanese sisters are the world’s oldest living identical twins. They are named Umeno Sumiyama and Koume Kodama and they are over 107 years and 300 days old.

They have broken the previous record set by late Japanese twin sisters Kin Narita and Gin Kanie. Kin and Gin held the previous record at 107 years and 175 days. But Kin died in January 2000 while Gin died in 2001, at the age of 108.

Umeno and Koume were born on 5 November 1913 on Shodoshima Island in Japan. Umeno has four children and Koume has three.

Guinness made the announcement on 20 September 2021. This day also happens to be Respect for the Aged Day – a national holiday in Japan.

Life expectancy

Japan is the country with the highest life expectancy in the world. So, it’s not a surprise that the world’s oldest twins live there. Moreover, the oldest living person on record, according to Guinness, is also a 118-year-old Japanese woman named Kane Tanaka.

What is the meaning of 'life expectancy'?

The term “life expectancy” refers to the number of years a person can expect to live.
