Odisha to set up 34 child-friendly police stations

Recommended for Middle Grades

On 26 October, the Odisha government announced plans to set up 34 child-friendly police stations across the state. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik approved the plans.

Why is this important?

Sometimes, even children need to visit police stations for different reasons. However, this can be scary too. So, the government said that this is a move that will hopefully reduce mental pressure on such children and encourage them to be comfortable and relaxed.

Each child-friendly police station will have beds, chairs, tables, toys and first aid kits for children. The walls will also be decorated with wall paintings and informative pictures.

The child-friendly police stations will also have the name and contact details of the Child Welfare Officer and other important information.

Children in India

According to UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund), India has the largest adolescent (children, teens) population in the world – 253 million. It is important to make sure to meet all their needs.

Therefore, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has put out guidelines to establish child-friendly police stations. Other states such as Maharashtra, Uttarakhand and Kerala also have child-friendly police stations.
