CAPSTONE to launch in June, 2022!
Recommended for Preparatory Grades
According to NASA, the launch of the CAPSTONE mission has been pushed back until the first week of June in 2022.
What are CubeSats?
Nanosatellites, which are also known as CubeSats, are a type of research spacecraft.
What is CAPSTONE?
The goal of the CAPSTONE mission is to test new navigation technologies and figure out how lunar orbit works. CAPSTONE is an abbreviation for Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment.
Fun facts about CubeSats!
- CubeSats can be constructed in less than two years. Thus they have become the ideal platform for showcasing how a new technological improvement would function in space.
- It is possible to release CubeSats from a rocket, or they may be delivered to the International Space Station (ISS) and released from there.
- CubeSats are frequently used as a secondary payload on many rocket launches, which helps keep costs down significantly.
- CubeSats have the potential to one day assist in the monitoring of severe storms, contribute to improvements in the accuracy of weather forecasts, and monitor the progression of climate change over time. For example- RainCube. or IceCube evaluates ice clouds which are essential components of weather and climate models.
Cool facts about CAPSTONE!
- The project aims to study the lunar and determine whether the orbit can be used by future spacecraft. A top priority is to learn how to send CubeSats beyond low-Earth orbit, to the Moon, and even farther away.
- Demonstrate how one could get into and stay in the lunar orbit.
- In addition, showcase how to efficiently get to the Moon’s surface and back.
- Show how spacecraft could find their way around each other. Thus future spacecraft won’t have to rely only on tracking from Earth to figure out where they are in relation to the Moon.
- Lay the groundwork so that commercial interests could support future lunar operations in the future.
