Google-AI to identify crown-of-thorns starfish outbreaks!

Recommended for Secondary Grades

The crown-of-thorns starfish is one of the most important problems facing the Great Barrier Reef. Google-AI (artificial intelligence) could help solve this problem.

Google, which is the biggest tech company in the world, is working with scientists from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) to create artificial intelligence software that could help find crown-of-thorns starfish.

What are crown-of-thorns starfish?

The crown-of-thorns starfish gets its name from the spines that cover its body and arms. Researchers think that the crown-of-thorns starfish is the second most important reason why coral is dying on the Great Barrier Reef, after coral bleaching.

What is manta tow method?

The manta tow is done by dragging a diver behind a boat while he or she hangs from a floating board. At regular intervals of two minutes, the diver stops and counts how many starfish and coral he or she has seen.

Fun facts about the Google-AI research method!

  • This method uses a film from an underwater camera to find areas on the reef where there is a lot of starfish.
  • Experts say that this method can help find more of the dangerous pests that feed on coral.
  • Google’s artificial intelligence technology could be taught to identify crown-of-thorns starfish better than the traditional “manta tow” method. The manta tow method was developed in the 1970s.
  • The new software can find more reef pests and stop them from spreading. For example, when researchers looked at the pictures they had taken, they saw 20 starfish. On the contrary, when divers were sent out, they could only find one.
  • The AI programme will be used on reefs all over the world. Thus it could have a positive effect on saving our reefs.
