Arangetram – A Traditional Indian Custom!

Recommended for Preparatory Grades

A student of an Indian traditional dance discipline such as Bharatnatyam will do their “Arangetram” as their first ever performance on stage. The term “Arangetram” originates from the Tamil language and refers to the moment when a dancer graduates from their official training and makes their debut on stage.

Fun facts about Arangetram!

  • Arangetram signifies that the classical dancer has completed his/her required training.
  • The ceremony, a traditional custom,  certifies that the creative artist as a disciple who, after spending many years learning the art form from his/her guru, is now ready to take the stage and teach it to other students who are interested in the field.
  • It also indicates that a dancer is able to execute the art form all by herself in front of a real audience.
  • At the beginning of an Arangetram performance, the dancer prays to God for favours by bending before him or her.
  • The dancer starts the show and dances to the beats that are being played.
  • A final salutation to a Sanskrit chant marks the closing of the Arangetram ceremony.
