Sikh guru Arjan Dev gave his life for his people on June 16, 1606. On June 16 one remembers Guru Arjan Dev’s sacrifice for his followers. The day is also called ‘Martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev’. 

Key facts about Sikh Guru Arjan Dev!

  • Guru Arjan Dev was born in 1563 in the area of Tarn Taran at a place called Goindval.
  • He was in charge of putting together the first edition of the Sikh book Adi Granth, which is now called the Guru Granth Sahib.
  • Guru Arjan Dev was the first Sikh person to die for the Sikh faith. Jahangir, the Mughal emperor, gave the order to kill him. 
  • On the day that remembers Guru Arjan Dev’s death, people often hold religious ceremonies in which they read from the Sri Guru Granth Sahib.
  • Every year, a group of Sikh pilgrims called a jatha travels to the Gurdwara Dehra Sahib in Lahore, Pakistan, to mark the anniversary of Guru Arjan Dev’s death.
  • The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) is responsible for organising the jatha travels.
